Exchange Period
The exchange period is the time within the 180 days in which the exchange takes place. The exchange period can be cut short if the sale property closes after October 17th of any given tax year as this causes the tax due date deadline of April 15th to come before the expiration of the 180th day. If this happens the exchangor must file an extension with the IRS for their income tax filing in order to maximize the full 180 day exchange period.
